A new blog about flight sims

My history of playing flight sims is about 20 years long now. I've been on an off flying various titles and more and more moved towards more hardcore realism side of things, especially since last 2-3 years.

Up until mid to late 90ies, flight sims were more visible products and a few titles would appear with some frequency, catering to various levels of realism and various aircraft. Big entertainment software houses like Microprose, Jane's, DiD are among the first to come to mind.

Simulations that allow user to fly anyone from a choice of multiple aircraft were relatively rare, and usually were less complex in depth compared to most single aircraft titles. This have rise to now age old terms "Study Sim" and "Survey Sim". Study sims would be usually be dedicated to a single type of vehicle to be simulated and it would be simulated in a very in-depth approach. Survey sim would provide a choice of many platforms, but their systems and flight models were usually made to a simpler standart.

Though, even survey sims may be considered too dense for folks who look more for insta gratification sort of quick, action packed entertainment. With video gaming becoming ubiquitous, software houses turned towards more hot selling genres. For a while, flight simulation seemed to be in a twilight with few titles coming every half a decade or so...

To us simmer's rejoice though, people kept working on it, and the genre is almost having another renaissance these days, almost...

First off, complexity and authenticity of both flight models and avionics / systems modeling of platforms have been improved leaps and bounds, surpassing commercial and military simulations of before. So did the graphical accuracy and visual eye candy.

Secondly, there now are, again, many choices catering to different kinds of simmers, along with one "do it all" platform, which does not step down a bit from being the most hardcore either!

Also, there are multiple very promising upcoming titles with people hard at work.

It is an exciting time to be part of flight sim community, and I have decided to start this blog to convey my thoughts on our hobby.

Welcome, and read on... :)
