What are DCS modules likely to release in 2021, well at least my prediction of it...
As we are about to be done with the first month of 2021, I thought I'd take a look at what are DCS modules like to release in 2021. The year, at least s far, seems to be going a bit better than 2020, but I guess we can all agree that isn't the highest bar to clear :P Let's see if it can prove a better year for DCS too! Spoiler: yes, it does look like it will be, at least from a module release perspective, especially for helicopters!
So here goes: DCS modules likely to release in 2021 in my semi-educated-opinion:
- De Havilland Mosquito, according to ED, this is the first module to expect from them this year.
- Mil Mi-24P Hind, hopefully in spring from ED according to pilotmi8's posts/interview
- AH-64D Apache Longbow, also from ED, and according to them, in 3rd quarter, this may delay in my opinion, at least a bit.
- OH-58D Kiowa Warrior from Polychop Simulations, no clear indication at a release date yet. Though I feel like we have see it in late spring/early summer, just a feeling though...
- Dassault Mirage F-1CE from Aerges, they said it may happen in about 6 months, and it's been a couple of months since that announcement. So this may be another thing to look forward to this summer. Not sure if any of the other 3 versions they want to make will happen this year though. I'd love them to, but even just one is great to have!
- Vought F4U1-D Corsair by Leatherneck simulations, I feel like this may also happen in either q2 or 3.
- Macchi MB-339A&PAN from India Foxtrot Echo. Their lead developer seem to be working really fast, and they already have a great foundation from freeware (but fairly high fidelity) mod they already released some time ago. So I do think that this one is likely to happen this year. But, that's just a guess by me, they have not stated any release dates so far.
The rest of developers/modules that are less likely to release something this year:
Heatblur doesn't seem like preparing anything new to be released soon, and Cobra said that most, if not all of this year they will be mostly silent and then it'll be like wooow (and then they've soft announced A-6!! :))).
Razbam, as said, is working on improving the health of their existing modules to a mostly finalized degree. They are all hands on deck for this purpose as far as programming goes. Once that is done, some devs will go back to developing new modules, but as far as I know, right now there is not a whole lot coding done on F-15E, MiG-23MLA, or Super Tucano. So we may not see a new module from Razbam this year, or see one late in the year. I may be wrong of course, and they may have done some work on one of the modules before switching to "finish what is released" mode, and may turn out something faster. Now, this is all about aircraft modules of course. Razbam is making a map too! And coders being tied up in tidying existing modules shouldn't have much of an impact on maps. We may perhaps see Razbam's South Atlantic map this year.
ED is already planning to release 3 modules this year, so expecting a 4th may be a little overboard. Though, a MiG-29A may actually be delivered fairly quickly if they reuse existing external model and textures, flight model, do systems development and cockpit, and voila... so who knows...
Magnitude still has the Corsair to deliver, and it may or may not require considerable post release work, depending on how it goes at release. Even if Corsair goes perfectly, it looks like there will be a lot of work to do on F-8 yet, so it is probably not reasonable to expect F-8 this year.
Deka Ironworks don't seem to have chosen their next module yet. And while continuing working on their JF-17, they are still considering the options apparently. It would be quite unlikely for them to release whatever their project will within the year. Though, who knows, given how quick and thorough they have been with the Jeff!
FlyingIron Simulations seem to have done quite a bit programming wise for their A-7E Corsair II, but there will no doubt be quite a bit more to complete. Their 3D model is in progress with no texturing so far (edit: yep, they have started the texturing!!). This is one of my most anticipated modules, but I think it will take a bit more yet, especially considering this is FlyingIron's first DCS module, and they don't even have an official 3rd party section yet.
So there we go... these are my semi-educated-shooting-the-breeze when it comes to DCS modules likely to release in 2021. Hope this is helpfult to someone, somewhere, and here's hoping for a good 2021!
